Y'all know how depression goes...ups and downs...it's a constant motion. My up time has lasted so long this round; one of the longest periods of time where I have genuinely felt GOOD! I have been feeling a little slip these last few days, but I'm staying hopeful that it's not necessarily an impending down slide. It's probably a combination of things...allow me to list them please:
1. I miss my family terribly.
2. I miss my friends terribly.
3. I'm working more hours.
4. I'm trying to be the best wife.
5. I'm trying to be a best friend.
6. I'm stressing over finances.
7. I'm stressing over The Ro Fo Sho Art and Photography.
8. I'm about to start my period (sorry male readers).
I THINK I'M SIMPLY OVERWHELMED! I've loaded up my plate with goals and ambitions, and I've set my bar high, and I'm already fearing failure. Failure. There's that trigger! Anyway! Y'all don't need to worry about me; I'll be fine. It's important for me to share that not every day is sunshine and roses...we must keep pushing forward.
I feel stuck with my art business...I don't know how to price my pieces, how to package them nicely for presentation and archival purposes, how to get the best reproductions made...I don't know how to do any of this. It will take time and I need to be patient and keep researching...I know this...but I'm really so damn impatient! Agh! Sigh...it's going to be okay.
For now I'll leave you with one of my favorite A Beautiful Mess Happy Mail pieces and a quick Prisma Color Nupastel drawing from a few nights ago called, "The Blue Lady."
There it is, dear readers...just feeling a little blue these days...and ready for a nap! Happy Tuesday!
Hugs and love, my lovelies,
The Ro Fo Sho

"Rainbows On Her Soles"
Well, helloooooo! (Please tell me some of you read that in a Mrs. Doubtfire voice?!) Jeez Louise it's been about 3 and a half months...holy moly! Sorry again for abandoning this little corner of the internet...for the zillionth time...ugh. But, hey! It's going to get better! Let me tell you why. So, after my last entry (An Angry Side to Depression), my struggles kind of...ummm morphed and thinned and bubbled up and over...I was basically all over the place emotionally. Stressed from my new job, still feeling anger and resentment, drained and dragging through every day. It was the first week in May when I just lost it for a few days. Truth be told, I screwed up with some of my prescriptions...as in I called them in and didn't pick them up on time...and my anxiety got a strong hold of me...like a vice around my soul and my heart...squeezing me to the point where it hurt to breathe and the tears came in floods completely uncontrolled. Depression and anxiety can make you feel crazy, and I tell y'all what, I was feeling like the craziest of crazies! I missed 3 days of work and I slept and slept and slept. I've said it before and I'll say it again...we don't always have to fight it...we are allowed to be weak...it's okay to keep the blinds and our eyes closed sometimes. But, again, like I also always say, we can't stay there very long or it can overwhelm us. So, I got my medicine and I got myself to work and I listened to my music and I created my art and I put my fists back up in the air on guard ready to fight the shadow again...and I've been fighting, my friends. I've been "Ro Fo Sho-ing!" that asshole darkness what's up and who's boss! Hell yeah! I'm going to try and make that a phrase for all of us living with mental illness..."Ro Fo Sho" with me, y'all...meaning keep fighting and don't ever give up...keep on "Ro Fo Sho-ing!" I think I'll make t-shirts haha! So! When I first created this blog, it was supposed to to be about my life with depression but also about my art...because my art comes from my life...and it's my therapy too...and like my story, I want to share my art with the world. Get ready... The Ro Fo Sho Art & Photography is officially on it's way...more details to come. And thanks for sticking with me, dear readers!
Hugs and love, my lovelies, and keep on Ro Fo Sho-ing!
Love and Peace,
The Ro Fo Sho

An Angry Side to Depression
Time to confess all of my recent struggles with my depression, dear readers. My medicine wasn't working anymore, and when I ran out, although I put the refill request in, I couldn't bring myself to go and pick them up. Basic living and functioning have become more and more challenging. Anxiety and depression typically go hand in hand, but I never really had problems with it until this last year and a half really...and it's gotten worse and worse, I'm afraid. During these last six months or so, I've developed problems with focusing and concentrating as well. I start projects, chores, or tasks, and I can't finish them...I look around at the mess and chaos and I get overwhelmed. Mindless tasks become my only comfort, but even then, I'm still fidgeting...watching TV while playing a game on my cell phone and rolling silly putty around in my other hand...rewinding the show time and time again because I missed something!
I quit my job. I couldn't handle it. The noise and fast pace just about drove me crazy. And again, I couldn't focus...I can't even tell you how many wine glasses I broke. Normally I can leave my personal problems at the door when I'm on the clock, but I really couldn't keep it together...smiling alone made me want to cry with all the energy it took to fake it. I've found another job, and I start tomorrow...it will be quieter and more easy going I think...I hope...
I've unraveled before in my fight with mental illness. I believe every single one of us will at several points during our journeys. Some times are harder than others...this one has been. It has been one of those times where I have felt extremely alone. Now I know that I'm not...I am blessed with support and encouragement from friends and family from all over! Sometimes that long distance love just isn't enough. And sometimes the people who are physically closest to me can't seem to deal with me during my worst times...I can sense their annoyance and irritation, their lack of understanding and or compassion. Then again, that could be the darkness casting its shadows and distorting reality.
Whatever the case may be, I have recently had thoughts I've rarely had before. Normally, I would never wish my internal war and demons on anyone else! This period of time, however, has stirred up an emotion I avidly try to avoid. Anger. Attitudes toward me have felt dismissive and uncaring...like I've become exhaustive and a burden to be around. Usually I can deal with it...not lately. I have been experiencing resentment towards the people who seem to lack any ounce of empathy. I've been wishing my pain on them...wishing they could walk in my shoes for a while and feel the everything and nothing that I feel! I hate thinking this way, I really do. I wrote a poem about it...I'll share it with you all later. Right now...I don't know what else I can say on this topic. I'm angry, but I know my thoughts are unfair and terrible...I wish it, but I don't...it breaks my heart knowing that millions of us suffer. I wish it, but I don't...no one needs to feel this way.
When I saw my doctor a few days ago, I simply lost it...I couldn't explain anything at all without an endless stream of tears. So here's the newest battle plan! I'll be taking 40mg of Prozac with the addition of 10mg of Buspar, and I will be starting therapy up again soon. The therapy will probably help the most since I'm obviously experiencing more emotions and problems at one time than I have ever had before! Talking with you all has always been a kind of therapy for me, but there are things I can't say here...things that are too personal, you know? I hold back really, and I think that's important for you all to know. I believe in keeping the discussion for mental illness open and honest...our voices need to be heard! But our battles tend to involve details that aren't meant for all of the internet world. For example, I don't want to talk so openly about individuals or relationships which are a part of my story because that could potentially involve other stories that aren't mine to share. You know what I'm saying? I try and share as much as I can, I promise!
Anyway! I'm going to wrap this up, my friends. I'll share that poem with you all soon! Just checking in like I do and giving you all the latest update on my depression. I hope everyone has a great week!
Hugs and love, my lovelies!

The Discussion Stays Open...
I've been working quite a bit...doing the housewife thing during the day and then going to my new job at night. My focus and energy have been on the new job, so my house work has most definitely suffered...still trying to find the right balance. So far I want to sleep as late as possible, then watch TV and be as lazy as possible, then get ready for work and go...this is obviously not going to be beneficial in any way. In addition to balancing paid work and house work, I need to make time for my art and for writing! Sprinkle in some depression and fatigue...well...y'all know the challenge...
Speaking of which! A couple of my very best of friends have been experiencing depression recently and the question I've gotten from both of them is, "How do you live feeling like this?" I know the initial weight when first confronting depression...the confusion and sadness and hopelessness and utter heart break...the tears and anger. It absolutely shatters me knowing that people I love are experiencing these emotions! And I wish I could give advice and answers that could crash through their darkness like the most intense ray of light imaginable! How have I lived the last 17 years of my life? Three factors. My mama has been on this journey with me since the beginning. The onslaught of emotions that left me staggering in soul wrenching bewilderment were very quickly identified by my mama...she knew exactly what was happening to me because she had been through it herself, so I've always had her support and guidance. The other two factors are a bit of a disappointment to hear, but the truth sometimes is...time and experience. I have had over a decade and a half to figure out how to live my life with an almost constant presence of darkness...a lingering shadow that has become a dark companion you could say...I've made wrong and right choices and decisions while in it's company, and I have learned what works and doesn't work. Drinking excessively does not work. Sleeping for days does not work. Shutting people out does not work. Opening all the blinds and letting light in helps. Talking about my feelings with a good friend or family member helps. Eating good healthy foods and taking walks in the sunshine help. Keep in mind, even though I know what I should and shouldn't do, it doesn't mean I always follow my own advice. But, it will be different for each individuals journey. I will keep writing about it and talking about it openly...I will continue to be encouraging...I will continue to share my ups and downs...the discussion stays open here.
I will find a balance in my life, and I will make a genuine effort to write much more...I'm so sorry for the long periods of silence! I know y'all understand how it goes with mental illness, but I believe I live with this for a purpose...my purpose is to be a voice. To dismiss stigmas and misunderstanding and to force people to confront it and talk about it. And, I don't mean every once in a while; I mean constantly!
Alrightythen! Well! I wasn't sure which direction this was going to go when I started writing, but the passion for this topic suddenly became overwhelming! My thoughts seemed to flow effortlessly from my mind to my fingertips on this keyboard...thank you for listening, dear ones.
Being able to talk openly about my life with y'all is a part of my treatment...it's something that helps heal me. I am grateful that you take time to read and understand...
Hugs and love, my lovelies,
Amy

Up Up and Away!
Good afternoon, dear readers! I'm on lunch break at my new job and thought it would be a good time to say a little something...you know...trying to get that groove back, y'all! Blogging from my phone, friends! Let's start with a word for the day...Up...yeah...today is up! Yay for up days!
I was so tired this morning and already thinking about how I didn't want to go to work...and it's only the 2nd day! Sleep sounded so much more appealing! Y'all know what I'm talkin' 'bout. Then I was feeling super sick to my stomach...legit thought I was going to lose my breakfast. But I gave myself a little pep talk of sorts and tried to work some mind over matter magic...it worked! I dragged my butt to work and I've enjoyed the day so far...knock on wood...don't want to jinx anything!
So the day could have very well ended up being a down day...I could have called out of work and slept all day. First of all, that would have been a bad first impression for a new job! Second, even though my body was asking for rest, my mind was determined to make the day different! It has taken me so long, longer than ever before, to rise back up from the abyss I was suffocating in; it seems like even one step back will have me tumbling down again. And I'm just sick of it! (Heads up, strong language in this next sentence!) So fucking sick of it! Strong language finished for now haha!
Anyway! For all of you suffering and having trouble finding your way out of the muck...try getting angry with it...get sick of it...throw your middle finger up at it! Screw this crap!
All right, y'all...time to wrap up! My new job is a photographer position, but I like to keep work details private...so no company name or any specifics like that. I stopped photographing people years ago, except for the occasional helping a friend or family member out. It just seemed like the right time to find my way back to one of the things I've been passionate about since I was a kid...so far so good! I'm painting more and writing more these days as well! This must be the light at the end of the tunnel...I hope! Thanks for taking some time out of your day to hear about mine, darlings!
I hope those of you still hurting start to see and feel that light soon! Hugs and love, my lovelies!

Blooming and Busy
Hi there, my lovelies! I've tried to write a few times this last month and a half, but I just couldn't ever get the words out like I wanted. It's been another long up, down, sideways, and upside down on the bad roller coaster ride! Below is a little something I started writing about two and a half weeks ago that I wanted to make sure I share...
Hello, dear readers, how have y'all been? It's been more than a month since I wrote last and I'm terribly sorry for that, but it's been a difficult time as I'm sure y'all have imagined with all that I've been sharing about my struggles recently with depression. Ain't it a bitch, right? Let's be real, my friends! If I could pick one word for this last month, a word of the day of sorts for the last several days, it would be heavy. The fight, my eyelids, basic functioning...heavy...a pressing weight. Every thing I do is with a push; I'm shoving against a massive presence that would rather keep me on my ass. It takes so much energy to get from the start of the day to the end of the day...it makes me just want to sleep...sleep and sleep and sleep until I wake up and have been magically healed and revived!
(written May 11th)
I'm happy to report that the weight has lifted quite a bit...the heavy presence has eased. I'm doing better...but every day is still a fight, and it's not an easy one just yet. And yes, it does get easier...there will come a time when I will almost forget about the shadow of depression that always follows me...I'll be blogging one day, and it will occur to me that, "huh...I can't remember my last bad day." It will be a big boost...another "high on life" wave to ride, and I can't wait! Time...everything takes time...I'm just trying to be patient and stay optimistic as I battle through each day.
I've missed writing, however, and I realize that I need to make more of an effort to stay consistent with this blog. But I've been busy! Friends have been visiting every weekend for the past month and a half, and today I started my new job! So here's what I'm thinking about as I share the latest and greatest with y'all haha...this is a blooming and busy time during my journey. Buds were bursting into beautiful blooms around me each day, and they became symbolic to me. I watched them during their stages and transformations...wondering, "what will this one look like." I took photographs of them at each new development, and I made little collages for Instagram showing their progress. As the petals uncurled and soaked up the sun, I was also blooming, and the sun was giving life to me as well! I am healing...
Friends visiting and socializing, preparing for my new job as a photographer, and now training for this job have kept me busy. The truth is I haven't been managing my time very well either! Whoops. Ok! So! Time to get my groove back! I have photos to share with you and paintings I've done and poems I've written...I'm looking forward to showing more of the art and creative side of this blog; excited to bring a little sunshine to this little corner of the Internet! For now I'll wrap with the obvious words for the day (and most recent days)...Blooming and Busy!
Hugs and love, my lovelies!
Been missin' y'all!
Love,
Amy Ro Fo Sho!!!

Let The Good Feelings Rule!
Word of the day: EXERCISE! I've been doing some half ass exercising, but today, I pushed myself a little more! Lunges...tomorrow will be painful haha, but a good painful! I tell you what, y'all, I'm believing in the power of your prayers and thoughts! I might climb out of this quicker than I thought...thank you thank you thank you so much for encouraging me; I'll never be able to express my appreciation enough, dear readers!
Today is a good day, and I'm happy! It's important for me to also say that it might not be a good day all day; tomorrow might be a bad one...that's the way of depression. The possibility is like an annoying high pitch buzz in the ear that can cause pessimism to creep in and ruin everything; but I will do my very best to ignore it and handle however I feel next when it gets here. Some of you may know what I'm talking about, so that's why I wanted to mention it...ignore the buzz and let the good feelings rule while you have them. Try to let optimism carry you and empower you! And if you're having a bad day, dear ones, I'm sorry and I wish I could make it better for you. I'll say try to get up and let some light in...but if you don't want to, that's okay too...some days are just hard.
Hugs and love, my lovelies!

Keeping It Real With Depression
Good day to you, dear ones! I've been home just a couple of days shy of two weeks, and I have been struggling. Missing my grandma in every moment of silence and free thinking; worrying about my family and all the conflicts present; heartbroken for friends with pains I understand all too well; dealing with insecurities and uncertainties in my personal life...so much negativity! The dark shadows of my depression are fiercer and more menacing these days, and it's exhausting having to hold them back while trying to keep my balance on this tight rope I'm walking...over and through this soul sucking bunch of muck! Ugh. So sorry to start off so dismal. Unfortunately, I'm simply keeping it real. This is living with clinical depression and other mental illnesses. I've been doing it for more than half of my life, as y'all know, so I'm fortunate enough to be self aware and knowledgeable about exactly what I need to do to win against these constant battles...
All of my blinds are open and the sunlight is shining bright all over my home. I'm drinking water infused with cucumber, mint, lemon, and orange, and I started my day with a walk and a healthy breakfast. Writing and sharing this with you on my blog is my favorite kind of therapy in dealing with my illness. I'm going to run errands today because I simply can't put them off any longer, and I know that doing so will help me feel better just by being in motion. And! I'm looking forward to spending time with my friends this weekend!
Okay, so I've typed it all out...now it's about getting up and doing these things! So there y'all go...a typical day of a person struggling with depression...let's see if I can do this! All of my readers with mental illnesses, today, just see if you can do something good for yourself; and as always, hugs and love, my lovelies!
Love,
Amy

Robin Williams and Depression
I came home from a trip to see friends from college. A few of my family members were mad at me for staying gone longer than I had planned. They had gotten involved with my personal business that I had already handled and taken care of. But, they still had an opinion. It was a lot of negativity pushed on me at once, and I thought, "What was the point coming back here?" "You know what? What's the point in being here at all?" I felt like a failure...failure is my trigger. I know I blow it up and make it bigger than it is, but even knowing it, I can't help it. One failure snowballs with others and rolls all around my brain picking up past failures and self doubt. I had been down like this before, but this was the first time I made it to that edge. Pain and sickness overwhelmed my mind and body and I was tired of feeling the heaviness of it more often than not. I poured my anti-depressants on my bathroom counter and I knelt in front of it. Tears ran freely down my face and my only thought was, "Will I die or will I just get sick?" I was terrified and heartbroken...I knew it would be my biggest failure either way...be gone or everyone knows I tried to leave. Then there was a silence inside me, and whatever I was going to do was going to come from that quiet place. But, my grandma walked in. I'm not sure if she understood what all she saw in front of her, but I do know she saw my tears. I got up and she hugged me tightly. I can't remember what she said. It was either compassion or tough love. That was the end of that. The pills were scooped up and returned to the bottle, and I went to sleep that night and woke up the next morning. I've had several moments since then where I've wondered how it would feel to just be free from depression, but I've never been back to the edge. It's been about 10 years now.
It breaks my heart when I hear about people who went over that cliff. How does it feel to have nothing inside you fighting to pull you back? My anchor will always be love...my unmeasurable love for too many people to count and for this beautiful world in general. I will always choose love, and I know that love will never let me down. Robin Williams was successful, cherished and admired by millions, and loved. Did he have an anchor? And if so, how did he lose it? I compare depression to darkness and suffocation...he must have been engulfed and drowning in it. That dark unrelenting presence must have gotten stronger and pushed and held him down. It's a terrifying thought! It's a crushing and yet hollow feeling knowing that what he did was maybe for just a handful of peace.
And how many people knew about his depression? I didn't know. The media made it sound like it was a big shock to everyone. I'm sure his family and close friends were aware. But, I wonder how involved they were in that part of his life...did he even let them in? He would have had every single kind of help available for treatment. Did he use them? Did he not feel like he could talk about it? Was it because of the stigma attached? Did he think no one would take him seriously since he was known has a happy and funny guy?
I know it's a lot of questions, but here's the big one. How do we keep the conversation about mental illness going and prominent? It's usually just a flash in the media that glows only temporarily before burning out until there's another flash. I try so hard to reach out and be a voice on this blog. No idea if I'm helping anyone, but I'm never going to stop talking about it, and it helps me to talk about it. If I were a celebrity, would more people pay attention? Depression and other forms of mental illness get attention from the media when something bad happens. A celebrity commits suicide, a prominent public figure has a mental break, and then there are the ones who go on killing sprees. Negativity negativity negativity! If my mama wasn't there in the beginning to help me through this and understand it because of her own experiences, I might have felt scared my whole life to talk about it. People might just think I'm crazy or I'm a bad person or I'm going to do awful things...I best just keep it to myself and suffer alone in silence. If that had been the case, I know I wouldn't be here today. So how do we keep the topic alive? How do we make this a global discussion? I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing here, and that's all I can do.
Not everyone is going to feel comfortable talking about it. Luckily for me, I don't feel like I have to hide it. I don't feel ashamed. It's a part of my life, but I'm living. I'm fighting. I'm loving! Screw stigmas and judgement and ignorance...mental illness exists. I'm not going to be quiet about it.
Robin Williams, I'm so sorry for the shadows that overwhelmed you. You will be greatly missed but remembered for all of time as the man who could make us laugh like no one else could! I sincerely pray that you have found peace and relief!
Thanks for listening, dear ones. And as always, hugs and love, my lovelies!

A Photographic Summary Part II
Today's photographic summary shares some moments with a couple of my best friends...they were and continue to be such a significant part of my life that I consider them sister soul mates. I'm sure I've shared this before, but just to remind y'all, Anna was my first friend after leaving Oklahoma to join my Sailor in Great Lakes, Illinois. We lived there 6 months, and during that time, I didn't have any friends. I made acquaintances walking Kakashi daily and enjoyed some nice conversations, but that was the extent of those relationships. Tom was a night student and had duty every 4 days, and I barely ever saw him. It was a very lonely time; definitely one of the lowest points in my battle with depression. Before moving to Virginia, I used Facebook to try and make some new friends so I wouldn't have to experience that loneliness again! When you're moving around in the military life, making friends is like dating...I, and I'm sure many others, will basically post personal adds on military Facebook pages describing the best qualities about myself and what I would like to do with potential friends. You know, like, "I enjoy eating out! I love wings and beer nights!" With all of that being said, Anna and I have always talked about our friendship like a couple reminiscing on how we met and how influential we've been in each others lives...it's kind of a weird description, but it really is the best and most accurate haha! Anna is my Itty Bitty (nickname), and she has truly been my saving grace...I wouldn't have handled the military spouse lifestyle as well as I have without her support, strength, love, and friendship! Here's a photo of us on the first night we met face to face!
Itty Bitty's cousin, Clairessa, moved in with her a little more than a year later, and she and I instantly clicked! I was so relieved that I liked her so much because I knew she was such an important part of Anna's life! Anna and I were destined to become friends, and with Clairessa's arrival, it became apparent that she was a part of that destiny as well! I call her my like minded weird friend because we both share a kooky kind of thinking. She brought a new kind of silliness and charm to my life, and she's helped me to smile and laugh during my saddest moments. There have been too many times to count how often the three of us have embraced each other all at once for strength, comfort, and love! Here's a first photo of the three of us together followed by just a few of the many similar photos we share!
The news about moving to Florida was exciting because I was looking forward to living in a warmer state, and I actually enjoy the experience of living in new places! But, I left a lot behind in Virginia...Anna and Clairessa were the hardest goodbyes of my life. And actually, I don't like to call it a goodbye...so long for now, and farewell until we meet again, were the phrases I wanted to use, so it didn't sound so final! The night before I drove down to Florida to stay, was spent with my girls. They showered me with farewell gifts and photos to remember them by to have around my new home. We cried and cried and cried, but we laughed and laughed as well! The three of us have matching tattoos, a double infinity symbol, and my parting gift to each of them was an infinity bracelet..I haven't taken mine off once! We've been through some really tough times together, through shattering heartbreak We've been through too many happy moments to count! We live 10 hours apart now...but these girls will always always always be two of my very best friends. And guess what? I'm going to visit them next month! Too excited for words!
Before I wrap this up, I have to shout out some love for Anna's husband, Eric! He's a Marine, and I'm so proud to know him! He and Anna have a beautiful relationship and are a great example of how marriages in the military absolutely do work! Eric has been a big brother to me and has encouraged and supported me through so many tough moments in my life, and I'm so grateful for him in my life. And I'm grateful for the friendship he and my husband have...it's always nice when the husbands get along! I love him as much as I love my Itty Bitty and Cee...I'm truly blessed to have these three in my life! It's like having more siblings! :)
I'll leave y'all with a simple little collage of what my last night with these gals looked like, dear readers! And remember, depression is a tough battle, but having the presence of friends instead of loneliness, is the very best kind of medicine and pick me up! Hugs and love, my lovelies!
Love,
Amy

Depression Derailment II
It's been 2 months! How did that happen?! Oh my goodness...I fail. I do apologize...I know I said before that I would not be absent for long periods of time anymore...but it's been a very stressful couple of months. Crazy, hard, challenging, and consuming couple of months.
Here's the scoop. Depression derailment. Ugh...y'all have heard about it from me before right here. It's not a case of my meds this time...I'll explain it more in depth to y'all later. I just wanted to check in today and say, "Hi, I'm still here!" My life basically went from limbo, to transition, to arriving at a new place with a load of problems and obstacles to deal with on my own...while trying to settle into a new home...a frustrating and utterly exhausting experience!
I'm going to summarize the last couple of months with some picture posts...each post shall be called "a photographic summary;" with minimal dialogue...only because there's so much to say and I don't have the energy to type it...pictures are more fun anyway! I'll try and start that tomorrow :)
Okay...I'm super tired...meant to go to bed earlier, but really wanted to reach out here first. I wish I had some words of wisdom or something silly to share, but my brain is empty this time. I'm getting back to my old self though...so hang in there with me, dear ones! I'll leave y'all with a little glimpse of what life looked like a little more than a month ago...chaos!
Goodnight and hugs and love, my lovelies!
Still here!

Another Update...Because That's Just What I Do! Ha!
My lovely dears, it’s time for another depression update!
Here’s a short summary in list form…because lists are cool.
Was doing really really well.
Triggers sent me falling back down.
Struggled and coped badly.
Got worse.
Got irritated with myself.
Remembered how great it was to feel the way I did before.
Back on track.
Getting better.
Seeing that happy light again.
It sounds so simple in list form, doesn’t it? All of us who
struggle with mental illnesses know that the word “simple” will never be used
to describe the fights we battle! The little side notes to my list would
include damaging relationships, drinking excessively, making bad decisions,
eating through sadness, and so on and so on. But you want to know what I
realized through this last bumpy ride off the tracks? Of course you do! I have
been dealing with depression (as far back as I can remember anyway) for exactly
half of my life thus far. What? Seriously? Half my life. It shocked me. My own
electrotherapy we could say…hahaha…not really.
So! I can’t even count the number of times I’ve fallen all
the way down to the belly of the beast. I’ve lost track of how often I’ve had
to find my way (with the help of friends, family, doctors, medicines, and self
reflection) through the dark and back to the light. The number I know is 16
years…half of my life.
My psychiatrist recently told me I’m actually in a really
great place of self awareness. I know how happy I was feeling, and I miss it.
The extreme switch from doing really well to doing really badly, gave me a side
by side comparison. The sharp and abrupt fall down, as opposed to the typical
gradual decrease, was cold water to my sleeping face. I’m awake now; determined
as I found myself to be before; and actually a little pissed off. I’d say that’s
great motivation!
How are your journeys going? Are you making a genuine effort
to take control of your illnesses? Remember that healing can start from just
opening the curtains, walking to the mailbox, making silly faces in the
mirror…just doing something that brings a little light, gives a little fresh
air, or causes a little laugh (just to name a few) can start a domino effect of
other little things that can start to bring some relief closer to you and
darkness further behind you.
Stay determined. Hugs and love, my lovelies!

A Dilemma With Depression
My doctor’s appointment is tomorrow morning to see about new
medicines to treat my depression. I was on Zoloft most recently, and it made me
feel terrible!!! So when I stopped taking it, I had some time where I felt so
much better…and then I was really keeping myself busy with exercise, chores,
and art projects…I could literally “feel” my depression underneath the surface…like
a sense of this imbalance…and I was dreading when I might start feeling the
symptoms more intensely…hoping that I would get to the doctor before it got out
of control. It is so important to stay on your medicine when you’re being
treated for depression…your doctor needs to be the one to help you transition to
another medicine or off the medicine all together. I told y’all before that I went
about this the wrong way personally…I stopped taking my medicine before talking
to my doctor. This was definitely the wrong thing to do and could have
potentially been dangerous. I’m lucky that I’ve been okay, but the last few
days have been another story. I could feel myself losing my grip…it’s like
starting to slide without being able to stop…and then hitting a wall! I hit the
wall today.
Sometimes there are moments or situations in our lives that
act as a sort of trigger that cause us to lose that stability…even with medicines
or alternative treatments. Sometimes something happens that causes us to feel
those symptoms of depression a little more intensely than what we’re use to
feeling when we’re being treated. It’s just a part of living with this condition!
If you think about it, anyone living with a medical condition, and being
treated, will still have days when they experience symptoms of their medical
conditions. My trigger has been exhaustion! My husband has been gone on
underway for more than a week, and this always messes up my ability to get an
adequate amount of sleep…mostly because of our 1 year old puppy. It takes more
energy and attention with him when my husband isn’t here to help. I feel silly
talking about this given than we don’t have children…but a puppy is still like
a child to me…I have another living creature I have to take care of! Lack of
sleep Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday night caused a break down today. I spent most
of the day crying for no apparent reason…and I couldn’t stop! I also wanted to
just scream at the dog, curl in a ball and sleep, and eat junk food…I couldn’t
shake the deep sense of sadness all day. Depression just sucks…simple as that…and
today has been a sucky suck day…yes…sucky suck. I took a two hour nap and ate a
hamburger and fries…I also received a very brief phone call from my husband…all
of these things made me feel a little better today. So I decided it was time to
share my college paper with y’all!
I wrote this paper earlier in the semester, and I edited it
later for my portfolio in the class…it was a freshman level English class I took
my sophomore year (my freshman year was focused on math and science classes due
to my major before changing it for my sophomore year…just so y’all know). I was
really proud of this paper…it was written only a year and a few months after my diagnosis with
clinical depression. Luckily for me, I never went through a period of time when
I didn’t feel like it was something I couldn’t talk about. There was a time
when I didn’t understand it and a time when I didn’t want to acknowledge it,
but I always knew that my mama was there to help and support me with whatever
was going on in my life! So I believe that when I finally opened up about
everything to my mama and went to the doctor, I had accepted the condition as a
part of my life (even if I did spend years on and off my medicine like I told y’all
before). Writing about it then was a way for me to research it and share it
with my classmates hoping to shed some light on anyone who was questioning the possibility
of depression in their lives. I’m going to share my summary about the paper…this
was a way for us to identify our audience and keep our minds open to the varied
opinions we would receive on our topics in that class. There are notes on my
paper from my professor as well, so periodically you will see parenthesis and
italics where I will clarify or amend something from my original paper. My hope
in sharing this paper with you all is that you will see that after almost 10
years since I wrote it, the same symptoms and thoughts are still relevant today…it
is a war with the same battles over and over…but every victory means something,
and those of us with depression are just going to have to keep fighting! DON’T
GIVE UP!
A Dilemma With
Depression
11/15/2002
My audience is anyone interested in depression on a level
that can be easily understood by anyone. Doctors, nurses or anyone in the medical
field might notice the lack of professional terminology, but they will
understand the symptoms of depression and how they affect their patients’
lives. The audience can be seen as a worldwide audience except for the fact that
a statistic specific to the U.S.A. is used and except for the lack of any
mention of worldwide issues that may cause depression.
I hate this feeling. I can’t control it. It plagues me like
an infinite time of darkness. But, this feeling isn’t present all the time, and
the darkness isn’t infinite; however, I’m always aware that it’s somewhere
inside. Despite the medication and support, the depression is there. It’s a
clinical diagnosis; it’s one that is hereditary and unavoidable, it seems. People
look at me, and they hear this story, and it doesn’t make sense to them. “She’s
always so happy. There’s no way that this girl could be depressed!” We that are
depressed are either really good at covering the illness up, or we can’t help
but show it. No one knew that there were times when I would curl up tight in a
ball at night and wonder about the most painless ways I could kill myself. No
one saw behind my eyes that need to escape the endless mood swings and feeling
of little control. But, it was there. As I write this paper, I wonder how free
it would feel just to let go of life. You read this and you either feel a
distant pity, or you want to reach out to me. You may be clinically diagnosed
with depression. You may know someone who is. In general, I am a positive,
open-minded, outgoing, and optimistic woman. Why am I depressed? Maybe knowing
the facts and the sources will offer some kind of hope or help to those of us
who are depressed and can’t seem to understand why!
“Sometimes depression seems to happen because of a stressful
event. Sometimes it seems to happen for no reason at all. Today, it is widely
recognized that depression is a medical condition that may be associated with
an imbalance in the delicate chemistry of the brain. It is thought not having
enough of a brain chemical called serotonin may play a role in depression.”
(Zoloft) I visited four web sites, and they all said the same thing. I’ve
always heard these kinds of statements, and I’ve always accepted them with a
strong conviction. It makes sense. But, no one can walk into a doctor’s office
and say that losing their job, a loved one, or something as emotionally
draining has caused them to have depression (I mean that yes these situations can cause depression, but a doctor
must diagnose clinical depression). It would be even more ridiculous to
approach a doctor saying, “You know, I really think the neurons firing around
in my brain are just a little off balance. I think I’m depressed.” Neither of
these scenarios would work. A doctor has to hear about your symptoms, and then
tell you if you are clinically cursed or currently experiencing an unpleasant
part of life at the moment. These were my symptoms, and these are just a few of
the common symptoms of depression: “Persistent sad, anxious, or ‘empty’ mood;
insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping; decreased energy, fatigue,
being ‘slowed down;’ thoughts of death or suicide attempts; difficulty
concentrating, remembering, making decisions; and persistent physical symptoms
that do not respond to treatment, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and
chronic pain.” (Depression Alliance) These symptoms are experienced on the down
days, and the days that I am feeling good are still haunted by the question of
when the next down day will occur.
My doctor in Oklahoma, the doctors I’ve seen in this little
college town, Lamoni, and my neurologist up in Des Moines, say that I’m depressed.
There are many different types of depression; some of these are Major
Depression, Dysthymia, and Adjustment Disorder with Depressed Mood, and each
has its own diagnostic criteria. Luckily, my own depression doesn’t seem to be
as severe and just scanning over the symptoms of these major depressions make
me shudder (My recent research indicates
that “Major Depression” encompasses a variety of different types of depression.
I’m not sure how I grouped that particular one here because clinical depression
was listed as part of the definition. Huh!). Check out
depressionalliance.org for the many symptoms of these types. “Depression comes
in many forms and in many degrees.” (Depression Alliance) (My professor wanted me to elaborate more on this point, but I’ll do
that later on or leave it up to y’all to look up!) With this in mind,
doctors have to prescribe the appropriate kind of treatment for each patient’s
case. There are antidepressants, cognitive behavior therapy, interpersonal
therapy, and problem solving therapy. (Treatments for Depression) In extreme
cases electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is needed (My professor asked if this was still controversial. The answer then and
today is still yes! Dr. Oz just had a show about it, but I didn’t catch it. If
you want more info, I recommend Google, but it still scares the crap out of me!).
It’s important to find which treatment will provide the most help. Knowing if
you’re depressed or not requires personal reflection because unless someone
else notices, we may be living our lives with a controllable illness that we
don’t realize is present (like missing
out on living life to the fullest!). Too many bad days can add up! I had to
figure out why I wasn’t the same person for so long, which in turn led me to
speculate depression. My mom saw it too because she had been there and still is
today, so together we made the mature and responsible decision to seek help.
I’ve lost loved ones. My heart was broken by a boy I loved
dearly. The path of my life seemed to go nowhere for so long. School was
stressful. Did these things cause my depression? Am I depressed because it was
bound to happen due to heredity? Why am I depressed? I’ve researched this
topic, and I’ve learned things I all ready had a vague understanding of. I’ve
talked with people before about depression and the ways they overcame it. I
take medicine now, and the day s I feel down I reflect on what may be causing
them. People who are depressed search for the source of their medical illness,
and they try to find ways to escape the sadness and frustration. We look to
facts about symptoms and treatments, and we take comfort in knowing the little
pieces, like how one in every six Americans will experience depression in their
lives. (Zoloft) We know that we are not alone. But, how do these facts,
statistics, lists, opinions, and new insights help us understand our
depression? They don’t. Scientifically, it all comes down to an imbalance of
firing neurons in our heads (This
statement is a little too simple. I can’t say that it “all” comes to an
imbalance of chemicals in the brain…science is still researching depression to this
day). We’ve seen the commercial with the bouncing smiley face that isn’t so
smiley! It all happens in the brain. However, understanding why just doesn’t
seem to offer any comfort. Let’s receive the treatment, and let’s try to be
optimistic. Let’s not ask why, but instead let’s ask how to continue overcoming
depression. Let’s take the facts and throw them away as soon as we know that we
have the right stuff to make us better. Let’s be there for one another and help
those who will come to be in our shoes someday.

When I read this, I actually feel a little proud of myself.
I was 20 years old then, and I’ll be 30 this year. Then and now, I was rallying
people to fight this illness…and it’s even more important to me now because I’ve
only recently learned that so many people are afraid to approach this medical
condition and the treatments available. I think I have 2, 3, or maybe 4 more
posts to cover everything else I want to say about depression. There are
different types of depression and different treatments to consider…and there
are things like exercise, diet, meditation, and prayer that are helpful as
well. Depression isn’t black and white…it’s a lot more complicated and
involved. After reading this paper, I am even more fired up for the battle with
this illness! I’ve been fighting it for more than a decade…and I’m only getting
stronger. It’s time for all of us to get our war paint on!
